2016 Pre-Season: Day 11 (10/25) and Day 12 (10/26)

Aloha, sports fans! Samson St. James here, reporting on this preseason match-up between the Hawaii Kahunas and the visiting Biloxi Voodoo. This scheduled skirmish has been on the calendar for months, but it took on extra edge late in free agency when rising Kahuna star Tanya Feckle shocked the commentariat by pulling up stakes from this sunny volcanic paradise to accept a more lucrative offer in the bayous of Cajun Country. The famed Aloha Spirit was not in evidence for the gerenuk's homecoming, with boos and calls of 'Sellout' raining down from the moment she set her hoof on the hardwood. The fallout from the Gerenuklear option, however, may prove to be abated somewhat by the reciprocal move of Warren Doyle from consonant surfeited Mississippi to vowel endowed Hawaii. How he will be welcomed when the Kahunas visit the Gulf Coast remains to be seen.
The first quarter was a blur and no plodder, a teeter totter with otter Scotter-- excuse me, Scoonie Barrett setting the pace early. The lithe and limber lutrine laid up eight points in the quarter. Feckle, for her part, has apparently adapted admirably to her new team, putting up six points of her own, a mark matched by mackerel maven Wallace Butler. End of Q1: BLV 28 HWI 28
The second quarter still saw the two teams evenly matched, almost seeming to be bizarro versions of each other, with a panther feeding assists to a rebound grabbing otter on one side (Teo Masalia to Barrett), and with a rebound-grabbing panther feeding the ball to an assist-giving otter on the other (Craig Reinhardt to Aragon Fisher). The single wrinkle was Feckle, still leading the Voodoo in scoring at the receiving end of the Fisher assist assembly line. It is still anyone's game to win at halftime. End of Q2: BLV 53 HWI 55
Is there no stopping Barrett? The Terminotter put up another seven points in the quarter, but Feckle was right behind him at every turn, with six of her own. However, the depth and youth of the Kahunas are beginning to show, as the home team widens the gap. End of Q3: BLV 79 HWI 83
Yep. There's no getting around it. The Voodoo are old. Their core of veterans has a lot of combined experience, but by the fourth quarter they looked like they were ready for the Early Bee Special at Applebird's. The obnoxiously youthful Kahunas, in contrast, just turned the stereo volume up another notch as they strolled across the Voodoo's lawn, sinking 33 points in the quarter, including ten more from the webbed paws of Barrett. Barrett was the predictable Player of the Game, with a grand total of 31 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks.
All is not totally bleak for the Voodoo. Feckle looked right at home in Biloxi maroon and earned the title of Voodoo Mama, with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. If anything, the taunting of the Honolulu crowd she used to call her own only appeared to invigorate her, fueled by their hatred like a better looking Vigo the Carpathian. Last year's surprise breakout star Reinhardt also looks set to continue on the same trajectory with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds tonight. Nevertheless, if this game is a sign of things to come, the Voodoo have a long season ahead of them.
