The 2012–13 FBA season was the IC 52nd/OOC 4th season of the Furry Basketball Association (FBA). The traditional Howlereen Invitational kicked off the pre-season on October 31, 2012 with the newly renamed Biloxi Voodoo playing the Montana Howlers in Billings, MT. The regular season began on Saturday, November 10, 2012 and ended on Sunday May 19, 2013. The 2013 FBA All-Star Game was played on February 19, 2013, at AmeriSteel Forum in Pittsburgh, PA, yet was broadcast "live" on February 23, 2013 due to timestream paradoxes from Furry Fiesta's Time Travelers Ball in Addison, TX. The playoffs began on Saturday, June 1, 2013 and ended on July 29, 2013 with the Dakota Bikers defeating the Tallahassee Typhoons in six games to win the 2013 FBA Finals.

Transactions

Free agency

Free agency offers opened on September 1, 2012, with players being able to sign starting Monday October 8, after the closing of the offer window.

Preseason

The preseason lasted for one week, starting on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, with the traditional Howlereen Invitational game that the Montana Howlers hosted against the visiting Biloxi Voodoo. Howlereen 2012 also marked the return of T.Matt Latrans to the broadcast booth for episodes of FBA Courtside: LIVE!, as the "Coyote on the Court" provided play-by-play action of the home team's victory by 12 points.

Regular season

The regular season started on Saturday November 10, 2012, and ended on Sunday, May 20, 2013. The final game of the season was also broadcast on FBA Courtside: LIVE!, with the Montana Howlers playing at home once again, this time against their conference rivals the Dakota Bikers. This game had been originally scheduled a month earlier on Sunday April 21, but had been cancelled and postponed due to a riot after an incident on the court.

For the majority of the season, all 24 teams had games scheduled on the same day, with single days off in between matches. Some teams did have back-to-back games.

Notable occurrences

  • The Underwood Rule was instituted at the beginning of the regular season, prohibiting teams from having more than five players of the same general species classification. After the grace period had expired on Monday January 21, 2013, the Baltimore Spirits became the first team to violate this rule with five canines on their club, and were subsequently banned from post-season play regardless of their final record at the end of the season.
  • The Bangor Tides had exceeded their hard salary cap at the beginning of the season, and were given the same deadline above to rectify their situation. When no resolution of the overage was made by Monday January 21, the Tides were also banned from post-season play. Their final record at the end of the season would have landed them at the #8 seed, but it instead went to the Plymouth Taproots.
  • On April 21, 2013, the match between the Dakota Bikers and the hosting Montana Howlers was cancelled and postponed due to a riot that broke out in the arena, following an allegedly unprovoked attack by Dylan Redfield (Red Deer, F) upon Shane Rufus (Red Wolf, G). The rookie's 20-game suspension allowed him back on the court for the post-season, while the MVP's injuries prevented him from rejoining his team as they got swept out of the playoffs by the Edmonton Totems.
