“Ouch.” That was all Keystones fan Larry Thomas (Jackal) had to say after Game 3’s devastating loss to the Albany Alphas last night at Frump Coliseum. After steamrolling their way to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history, the Keystones have abruptly found fortune’s wheel turning against them. It feels as though every game has brought a new and unwelcome affliction to the beleaguered club. Last night, it was Lance Freewell (Clouded Leopard, C)’s turn on the injury carousel. A minor back strain in Game 2 had the leopard on the day-to-day list, but coach Anton Schumacher (Eurasian lynx, HC) and Freewell himself felt confident enough to put the veteran on the active roster nonetheless, albeit deep on the bench with minimal play time as opposed to his accustomed starter slot. The game went poorly for the Keystones from the beginning. After sophomore Friedrich Peschke (Cat, C) won the opening tipoff over late-season D-league call-up Shubhra Rajni (Indian Elephant, C), the Alphas quickly scored first blood off a layup from four-time all-star Rodger Umaechi (Husky, F). The team from New York went on to dominate the first quarter building up a 9-point lead by the 12 minute mark. The Keystones swung back in the second quarter off strong performances by Terrence Tolliver (Pronghorn, G), Wayne Kirkpatrick (Tasmanian Devil, F), and Randy Catcher (Bullfrog, G), who lived up to his title as the league’s regular season leader in assists. Though the Keystones were still down by 7 at the half, no one believed the deficit to be insurmountable. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, Albany had no intention of letting them get any closer. In the third quarter the Alphas’ deadly duo of Umaechi and Xavier Knutten (Squirrel, G/F) raised the lead to double digits, at times nearing 20 points. Knutten ended the night with a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds, and earned the Player of the Game title for his efforts. However, what Keystones fans will remember most of all for years to come – probably in the middle of the night, with a chill and a shudder – will be the fourth quarter. In keeping with his position at the bottom of the roster, Freewell had been quiet up to this point with fewer than 4 minutes on the court. The spotted feline had sunk both of his attempted field goals and chipped in with a pair of rebounds. With the game starting to swing back in the Keystones’ favor and with the Alphas appearing visibly fatigued, Coach Schumacher put the clouded leopard back in for one more shift in an effort to further close the now-single-digit gap. It happened in an instant. Freewell found himself in a mismatch against Alphas’ role-player Seria Delgado (White Wolf, F). Exactly what happened next was hard to discern even in replays, but a botched jump pass resulted in the taller, heavier feline landing awkwardly on top of the younger female as a shocked gasp echoed across the arena. Both Freewell and Delgado had to be helped from the court, clutching their back and neck, respectively. The remaining Keystones made a spirited effort to eke out the win, but it was not to be. The Alphas won with a final score of 108-99, and taking a 2-1 lead in the series. Freewell was diagnosed with a torn lumbar ligament, an injury that he may require two weeks to recover from. Delgado was diagnosed with a less serious sprained neck that is expected to sideline the lupine for one week. If the Alphas go on to advance to the next round, Keystones fans may very well point to this night as the moment they lost the series. All hope is not lost, however. Just as Freewell sits down for an extended stay on the disabled list, rookie phenom Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, F/G) is standing back up. Trainers expect the effervescent jaguar to be ready to return to the lineup before the series ends. Game 4 is Wednesday night in Albany. -S. St. James
