Biography

Early Life

Arther Selby was born in England near Coventry, his family were not the sporting type in his early years, he lived on the farm with his parents and younger sibling Paul. As wee kits, the both of them would often be seen tearing around the farm much to his father dismay. His parents tried to get him into sports at an early age with his brother to burn off some of that energy. Although outside the farm Arther was often quiet and kept to himself. In his early years, he often avoided any situation where he could become the center of attention. Even though his fitness was good he didn’t excel in any sports (football, rounders, touch rugby, tennis).

The First Step

This all changed when he was 12, when his secondary school started to do basketball as part of the school curriculum. Most of his classmates were more interested in football, rugby or cricket but not Arther. The moment it was mentioned, he was fascinated by the game, teachers were impressed at how quickly he picked it up and how it started to bring him out of his shell. He joined the school's basketball team without hesitation but that was not enough for him. From that point on, his life was focused on basketball. He would often do chores for the family and help out on the farm to pay for the sports subscription, this was his first exposure to the EFBL and FBA. He would often watch matches with the Huntsville mayors and make notes analyzing what happens, he was also part of the FBA and Huntsville fanclub and would often write in showing his love for the game and the players.

It wasn’t long before he tried out for the u16 team. Although his lack of experience showed and he was eliminated from the process. At first, his family thought he would be crushed and would make him put up the ball for good, but this only pushed him further, making him practice more and more, both at school and at home. His father put a hoop up the side of the barn and his brother would often help him practice (well as best as kids could do). Their competitive nature drove both of them to get better and better. Getting them into the national u18 team.

University

He got into Elion University without much issue and was excited. At this time, he caught up with his peers and was looking forward to the challenges in the year ahead. Though his first year at university was rocky at best. He kept on missing practice and games due to major fatigue and severe stomach cramps. Many believed it was due to him making the most of university life and enjoying the freedom. However, lecturers started to worry when Arther began to show signs of severe weight loss; which Arther couldn’t explain. About 6 months in, he collapsed outside of class and was rushed off to the hospital. It was from there where he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.

When the university was told, they deferred his studies until the following year. Again he was behind but by damn he was not going to let that happen again. The moment he was released from the hospital, he pulled himself to the coach's office and begged him to put him back in the team. He was willing to do anything. While recovering he became the teams errand boy, this included washing jerseys (dirty work but someone had to do it). When his strength started to returned and with approval from the coach, He returned to training a few months later, although did not see play until the following year. During this time, the coach tried to hone his long range shooting, as his strength was in question and was worried about his athleticism, helping him shift from his slasher style to a more balanced offensive player.

His later years, he went from strength to strength. At first he was on the bench and over time got onto the starting lineup. He was often swapped between the small forward and the shooting guard throughout those years, the coach trying to find the role best suited for him.

During his final year, he started to look at the possibility of moving to the states to play in the big leagues that is the FBA. He heard rumours about scouts coming to some of his games but has not heard anything yet, he recently got an agent with the spare money he had from the farm to see if that helps. He has countless arguments with the family about whether he should do it, there was some suggestion with everything that’s happened, that it might be best to consider a different career path; like his brother did a few years back. For him it wasn’t the fame that was driving him, it was the chance to inspire the next generation like Lance Wildfyre with GROW, or his hero Buck Hopper. At 22, this is his best chance while his health is still stable and is manageable.
