Bali Mahi (Peacock, born September 25, 1991) is a male Indian basketball player currently under contract with the San Jose Thrust of the FBA.

Biography

Some come into the league with nothing, born holding the short straw and fighting tooth and nail for everything they got. Some are tailor made for success, with every opportunity afforded to them to help drive them in the right direction. But few can truly say that had it all, and gave up everything for their chance.

As a peacock in Punjab, India, and only son of distinguished spiritual leader Ranji Mahi, Bali had certain expectations instilled on him even at birth. Though he enjoyed a lifestyle and prominence common for his kind, he lived a life in accordance to his father’s wishes and the traditions of an old generation. Athletics were only encouraged as a form of fitness, not as something he could ever pursue beyond school, and certainly not as a career. This was obstacle expounded by the fact that he was a male peafowl , bred with a natural hindrance that made basketball impractical: his long, exquisite tail.

Bali from a young age learned to deal with playing with unusually long feathers. But as puberty beset him, and his plumage started growing to their full potential, Bali was faced with a decision that would change his fate, and ostracize him from family and shame his culture.

He need only remove one feather.

Bali Mahi, as a necessity to be able to play the sport he loved so much, had to alter his tail by shortening it; an act that flew in the face of his religious traditions, viewed as an affront to God. Being the only son of a renowned spiritual icon, and having been groomed to be the same, only exacerbated the offense. The fallout that followed resulted in a formal denouncement and rejection by Ranji of Bali as his son. Because he could no longer face his family and was shunned by those who respected his father’s wishes, Bali found little alternative than to leave his home for good.

Luckily, Bali’s tarnished name did not reach so readily beyond his providence. He traveled to New Delhi to continue his pursuit of athletics, eventually earning a spot in an all-avian league in Mumbai. But Bali's inevitable goal was to travel to America to participate in one of the greatest associations that permitted all species.

He got his wish, at least in part, when a few teams from the league came to the USA for an invitational between a North American avian union comprised of birds spanning Panama to Canada. Bali was able to make a splash with his graceful assists and fearless defense despite his height, a somewhat comical sight to see the emboldened and colorful player take on fierce raptors that dwarfed him. He was ejected from one of the games when he initiated a brawl after a vulture from Minnesota goaded Bali by insisting he was "too pretty to play".

Now a days, Bali is described as a self-hating peacock with much to prove, choosing to regularly pluck his tail (rather than to cut it) as a form of penance in addition to shortening it. Because of this, his once beautiful tail has become ragged.

Changing Agents

Bali Mahi entered the league thanks to no small effort of his agent, Murina Beaubonique (female black rat). He was drafted to the Biloxi Voodoo alongside one of Beaubonique other clients, Kinny DeMarcus (Hairy Bush Viper, G). The legless snake quickly enjoyed a surge in popularity, becoming a fan favorite despite being a sub-par player. Bali, overshadowed by Kinny’s outgoing spirit, was left to languish in deep reserve for the majority of his rookie year. Jealousy and suspicion eventually spurred Bali to accuse his agent of giving preferential treatment over him to his mediocre yet charismatic teammate. Longtime rival of Murina’s, and bane of all sports agents, successful athlete representative Sedrick LaTour (male coatimundi) took advantage of Bali’s displeasure and convinced him employ his services and drop the rat.
