Cody Benson was born in Quinter, Kansas. He was the middle child of 5 children. His parents live a mile outside of town with plenty of farm land, growing mostly wheat.

Cody grew up with plenty of hard work, and family activities. His family didn't own a TV, so in their free time, Cody and his brothers played basketball. Cody loves competition, and playing against his brothers was his favorite thing to do. Sports are a big deal in his small town and among the boys he hung out with. Baseball never really interested Cody, but basketball and football did. In middle school and high school, he played both football and basketball because he had grown quite tall and big. Basketball was his first focus. His brothers before him had been pretty good, but Cody was outstanding. He earned all-state honors his sophomore, junior, and senior years. He led his school to its first and second State Title.

He was a the odd one out in his family. While his brothers did play basketball, they did it as a past-time. They were more focused on the farm work, and following in their father's footsteps. Cody was always more interested in playing basketball than agriculture. Skipping out on chores to play a little one-on-one at the park or going to a friend's house to watch some basketball. But, even though he did shirk some of his responsibilities, he did learn how to work hard, which he transferred over to basketball. Any time he wasn't at school or doing chores, he spent practicing basketball.

Sam doesn't dislike where he's at, but he's longing to get out of his small town to travel and meet new people. He graduated high school with average grades. His parents pushed him to try hard, but he never really was good at tests. His basketball performance piqued interest of several college basketball recruiters. His somewhat controlling parents persuaded him to go to the college that his older brothers went to, Great Plains University in Salina, KS.

Cody entered college as an undeclared major, not really knowing what to do with his life. He had dreams of playing in the FBA, but it was mostly a fantasy. Because he was a freshman, he spent time on the bench. It wasn't until mid season that the starter power forward broke his ankle that Cody found some playing time, and had a strong performance. In just a couple of games, he proved himself as a strong player. He passed the second-string power forward, and earned himself a starter position on the roster. It was then he knew that, with hard work, he could earn a spot in the FBA.
