Kevin Malka (Giant Pangolin, born June 17, 1993) is a male Canadian professional basketball player for the Winnipeg Voyageurs of the Furry Basketball Association (FBA). Malka previously played collegiate basketball for Oshawa Interspecies Technical College.

Born in Mindemoya, Ontario, Malka lived on Manitoulin Island and spent time visiting the nearby Wikwemikong native reserve. He studied photography at OIT until 2014 when he declared for the FBA draft. Malka was selected with the 24th overall pick by the Winnipeg Voyageurs in the 2014 FBA Draft.

Biography

Kevin spent the early years of his life in Mindemoya, Ontario, as well as the local Native reserve of Wikwemikong. As a child, Kevin spent the majority of the time outside; hiking, swimming, and exploring across the island with his friends from the reserve. Kevin, his parents would say, was a bit of a troublemaker, always trying to find a way to playfully one-up his friends. That all changed during his time in the fourth grade. On a dare, Kevin tried out for the basketball team. Although his initial attempt was doomed to failure, it was this dare that sparked in Kevin his love of basketball, and of sports in general. Rather than spend time hiking, Kevin began convincing his friends to get together at the public courts for pickup games, drawing in crowds of passing kids to join in the fun. When he wasn't at the court, blocking any comer from getting to his net, he would be at the beach, swimming like a fish.

During highschool, Kevin dedicated himself completely to basketball. For once, Kevin thanked his massive growth spurts, and he reached his final height early into his high school career, allowing him to focus on becoming a Power Forward. He bulked up in the gym, so he could better guard the net, and spent what little free time he didn't spend on the court or in the gym at the beach, simply relaxing in the waves of the lake. It was during these years that he discovered his sexuality, which he hid in fear of retribution from his teammates. A great highschool career later and he earned a basketball scholarship to the Oshawa Interspecies Technical College, where he studied photography.

Ever since he become hooked on the sport in the fourth grade, Kevin dreamed of joining the FBA. His hopes raised when, despite not getting drafted, Eli Schuck managed to begin playing for the Santa Ana Spectrums, taking the name of the first pangolin in the FBA. Despite that, Kevin still feared entering his name for the draft. But, when he watched Antonio Garza propose during the the halftime of the April 12th, 2014 Winnipeg vs. Hawaii game, Kevin decided to put himself forward, not only into the draft but also into accepting himself for being gay.

During his final year playing for Oshawa Interspecies Technical College, OIT managed to qualify for the CFIS tournament, where Kevin was given the chance to play his best and show off his defensive skills, especially against fellow draftee Edwin Griega. Despite his and his team’s best efforts, OIT lost out against AUH in the second round, finishing their games for the season. Despite their loss, OIT went out for drinks after the tournament, celebrating their overall successful year, and the graduation of their best defensive player, Kevin.

Kevin is a very friendly, relaxed person. He's the kind of person who tries to get to know everyone, even his competition, at least a little bit. He's always there for someone who needs help, no matter the cost to himself. He's a bit of a gentle giant, and sometimes seems sullen if he remains quiet for too long, a side effect of hiding his sexuality for so long. Since opening up, this friendliness has only increased. He's just as down for a friendly game, even with enemies, as he is for a drink among friends, although he refuses to drink enough to get anywhere near drunk. Kevin is a defensive player, through and through. He’d rather see his team succeed through the blocking of shots, even if he makes not points himself, than see his team lose over a desire to score.
