Lance Alexander Freewell-Petit (Clouded Leopard, born August 1st, 1985), known professionally as Lance Freewell, is a retired professional basketball player who most notably played for the Newark Pride and Pittsburgh Keystones of the Furry Basketball Association.
Freewell was born in Wright, Wyoming. He is of English and Kristang (Eurasian) descent from both his father, Royston Freewell (b.1953-†2004), and his mother, Sharon Petit (b. 1960).
Lance's childhood was affected by the insane growth spurt he went through, 6' at 12 and already hitting the 6' 6" line at 14 years of age. In such a small town like Wright, that alone was an all-honors pass to the local basketball teams. The feline didn't show a lot of interest at the time, even escaping some practices to slack off. The thing is, he was an absolute natural, his long limbs and agility a deadly asset. This let him to crossroads: Part of him was wanting to walk away to give others a chance, but another part of him was insisting to stay, for this could've been a profitable outcome if he stuck. As such, scouts noticed him as "talented, but lethargic, like a unwilling kid with a bossy stage mom". The skill brought them, the attitude repelled them.
It was only when he reached age 16, after browsing the FBA and the luxury life some athletes lived, that he was sold in his potential and took practices seriously. And stronger and stronger his game got, as well as his love for the sport. An incredibly dominating run during the last year of his high school athletic career cemented the leopard as a must-see talent and had scouts talking about his brilliant rebounding and swiftness, Double-Doubles always present. In a controversial move, the leopard decided to jump straight into the 2004 FBA Draft after graduating high school. Although this was a major concern, his natural ability, as well as his 'cool cat' attitude impressed enough to guarantee him a spot, being picked by the Newark Pride in the early second round.
The feline's revitalized energy, his extreme defensive capacity and hustler mentality quickly made him one of the Pride's strongest assets, despite violating the FBA's code of conduct twice with interviews gone awry and marital problems, Newark offered Lance a three-year extension after his rookie contract expired and, after becoming a Champion and Final MVP, another seven-year one far surpassing the former's worth, establishing him as one of their franchise players.
But the milk and honey relationship between team and player came to a grinding halt after the 2013-2014 season, as Pretty reportedly demanded a trade from a seemingly crumbling Pride and was soon shipped to the Pittsburgh Keystones in exchange for Dorian Black (Black Cat, G/F). The move met with mixed replies, qualifying it between "smart economic-driven choice for his last run" and "taking a dump on the team that treated him the best". Regardless of opinion, truth of the matter is that Freewell is still a player hot on the heels, proving his ability is still strong and ongoing wherever he is.
Lance cites Nohea Holokai (Orca, C), Karl Gruber (Cougar, F/C) and Lorcan Donegan (Irish Draught Horse, C) as inspirations for his playstyle. He has stated he has taken a mentor role with rookie and "fellow spottycat" Shirley Takamoto (Jaguar, F/G).
On June 5th 2004, tragedy stroke the Freewells, as Lance's dad Royston was found dead near his workplace that afternoon, after reportedly going incommunicado for the whole day. The death was ruled as suicide by drain cleaner poisoning. As this happened during the leopard's combine and start of FBA route, he revealed to the media his dad's struggles with bipolar disorder, stating the tragedy happened during a rather extreme depressive period. From that day, he swore that if he got in the FBA, he'd form an alliance with Hope's Nest, a NPO dedicated to the treatment and reintroduction to society of furs with mental and psychological disabilities just like his father, the Freewells becoming spokespersons as well as occasional donors.
Freewell has been married twice:
- Patricia du Toit (Cheetah), socialite (2008-2010, divorced)
- Jenna Lanskaya (Amur Leopard), Talk Show Host (Access Furrywood, The Insider) (August 14th, 2014-present)
Lance's divorce with du Toit was highly publicized, since she stated that Freewell was "having multiple affairs while on away games", a fact the leopard confirmed a year later after the divorce, although he confessed to only one instance, claiming du Toit was "exaggerating for personal gain". The actual judicial proceedings and agreements were left undisclosed to the media.
The rivalry and similarities between him and fellow Center Lance Cheval (Stallion, C) has been played with by the media multiple times before, both in advertisements (mainly beauty products, with both constantly sponsoring competing brands) and on the court. Despite this, the relation between the two is self-described as amicable.
