Born in 2000, Nikolay Volkov was the first and only pup of Maksim and Tasya. Though Nikolay’s story begins well before his birth with his father Maksim.
Maksim was born in the Caucasus mountains during the height of the Cold War. Despite humble beginnings as the son of factory workers, he would find fame through basketball. His talents first earned him a spot on the USSR’s National Junior team before starting on the 1988 Soviet Union Olympics basketball team at the age of 20. He played a pivotal role in the Soviet Union’s eventual Gold Medal victory in those games. That jubilation only lasted a few years as he watched his nation undergo an upheaval as the Soviet Union dissolved. With the fall of Communism opportunity sat before the young adult. Whereas before he was forced to remain an amateur athelete, he could now leverage his fame by declaring for the FBA Draft. However, despite the opportunity, Maksim remained in Russia. Instead he joined the now-defunct RPBL, the first attempt at an all Russian professional basketball league, where he played for eleven more years before retiring in 2002.
Maksim’s career was at times controversial as doping rumors circulated and hounded him throughout his career, especially after his absence from both the 1992 and 1996 Olympics during the peak of his career due to ‘injuries.’ This lead some to believe and report that he refused to go to the FBA and Olympics due to fears he would fail drug tests, whereas in Russia he would remain protected. Nothing was ever proven, and despite it all, he was an accomplished player in the RPBL and remained well-known in Russia for his 1988 Olympic performance.
Eventually, he met his wife Tasya in late 1998 and before long they were married and expecting their first cub, whom they named Nikolay.
Whether the young cub would play basketball was never in question. From a young age, Maksim took a vested interest in his son’s training, personally overseeing it since the age of four. He developed an intense training regiment with the goal to drill into the young cub every technique he had polished over his career. This included his specialty, the hook shot, a difficult to master short-range shot that was nearly impossible to block due to the separation it creates from the defender.
Basketball was all Nikolay knew growing up. His circle of friends was paltry at best as he spent most of his time obediently following his overbearing father’s training regiment. It was hard to argue with the success of the training though, as Nikolay stood head and shoulders above his peers.
That talent allowed Nikolay to sign with FSKA Moscow, the premier EFBL Russian team, in 2015 only a few months before his 16th birthday. Rumors circulated that his father had pulled strings in order to get Nikolay on the team, though Maksim remained noticeably absent after the signing. Some outlets ran storylines of a falling out between the two but nothing was ever verified as neither Nikolay nor Maksim would comment much on each other when pressed by the media.
Nikolay only saw limited minutes his first season, at times receiving criticism over his lack of enthusiasm and his play style being so vastly different than his teammates. FSKA Moscow was known for their rough play and aggressive attitude, whereas the wolf specialized in close range hook shots and usually looked apathetic on the court, so much so players started to compare him to that of a robot replica of his father. But even if his style did not mesh at times with the team, the wolf worked his way up the rotation to the starting line near the end of the 2016-2017 Season. Alongside fellow wolf Anastasya, the two proved to be a formidable frontcourt for the next season.
However, with his 18th birthday passing after the season 2017-2018 season came to a close, Nikolay declared for the 2018 FBA Draft.
