Rodger Umaechi, a husky and avid coffee-lover, is also a professional athlete who now plays for the Baltimore Spirits in the FBA.

Short Bio

When Rodger Umaechi chose to skip college and enter the 2008 FBA Draft right out of high school, few analysts were impressed by the Ohio-born husky with a flashy website, infectious smile and a curious love for gourmet coffee. But the Mounties were rewarded when they looked past his old knee injury and picked up a hard-working, highly skilled forward, plucking him from the unsuspecting grasp of the Tennessee Moonshiners in a draft day trade that turned out to be one of the most cunning moves in FBA history.

"Dasher" may have simmered in his first season, but he's been boiling ever since, earning a Most Improved Player award in 2010 and the MVP award in 2012.

FBA Career

Rodger was drafted 5th overall by the Tennessee Moonshiners in 2008. He was traded on draft night to the Idaho Mounties as part of a 3-way trade. The Moonshiners received the 8th overall pick, Rodney Ballinger (Otter, F), from the Tallahassee Typhoons, while the Typhoons received the 9th overall pick, Julia Fernández (Kinkajou, G), from the Idaho Mounties.

Rodger won the Most Improved Player award in 2010 with the Mounties. That offseason, Rodger signed a 7 year/$142 million contract to play for the Alaska Arctics. In 2012, Umaechi was named the FBA Most Valuable Player. However, due to feeling disrespected by team management for bringing him off the bench in the first round of the 2012 playoffs, Umaechi forced a trade to the Albany Alphas, who sent back Carl Esteban, $2m in 2012-2013 cap space and the 2012 #3 pick. In the trade, a 3-way deal, the Arctics also received William Keen [EDM] and the Edmonton Totems received Kasa Yalenchka[ALK]. The Totems also received the 2012 #13 pick, while the Alphas received the 2012 #30 pick.

2016 was a good year for the husky. Rodger made the starting lineup of the East All-Star team and won the 2016 All-Star Game MVP award. And after falling in the 2015 Finals to Finals MVP Victor Vos and the Santa Ana Spectrums, Umaechi and the Alphas bounced back to collect the 2016 FBA Championship, the first for the franchise since 2005. Rodger was named Finals MVP of the 2016 FBA Finals. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal with Team USA in the 2016 Olympics.

In 2017, after Albany failed to crack the postseason following a championship year, Umaechi decided to take his talents to Charm City, signing a 3 year, $62 million contract to play for the Baltimore Spirits.

Rodger Umaechi is a 5-time FBA All-Star, playing in each All-Star Game since 2012.
