Why we play 2

October 16, 2019:
“Cloricia! I’m sorry, Okay?! I know I said I would meet you, and I will, but I just needed you to do this for me.”
So my mom called after practice today and I know that she’s my mom but I didn’t hold back when I said that I was so upset with her. I had a great practice today, worked real hard, but I somehow found the energy to argue with my mom on the drive home.
“Mom, the last time I saw you, I was seven years old! I’m 31 now so don’t think that when my mother calls me and says she wants to meet that I would just get over it if she doesn’t show up!”
“I needed you to be there! So yes, I lied, but it was to make sure that Cloricia had a home!”
“Oh, and then there’s that. You gave her my name?!”
“I don’t know...I still felt guilty okay? I still missed you and your father, I just couldn’t...I don’t know…”
“Yea...I guess I don’t know either.”
“Cloricia...the girl’s mother died giving birth to her...and to make it worse, my husband is her actual father but it’s clear he doesn’t want to raise that girl...that’s why I need you Cloricia because without you, there’s nowhere else she can go.”
“Yea, your new husband sounds like a real charmer.”
“Tex just...until I can find a home for her just please watch after her. You got her clothes, her passport, her social, and all her books so she can continue home school. Oh, and the credit card, but it does have a limit on it...just please take care of her and I promise we will meet soon. No more tricks, no more lies. Okay?”
“...only my friends call me Tex.”
I didn’t give her a chance to respond. I just hung up the phone. Then I screamed, for a while, then just continued to drive. Yes, I was upset. I was incredibly pissed off and I’m allowed to be...right?...I don’t know.
When I got home, I parked the car and just waited outside and looked at our house. The perfect house for Teresa and me. We’re renting it now, but we’ll own it soon and finally start our life together. I could smell something cooking inside when I approach the door. I opened it and grudgingly walked over to the kitchen. There I saw Teresa making dinner. I didn’t know what it was but it smelled good.
“Hey, there you are! How was…” I stopped her sentence by giving her a hug. She was just so big and soft and I just needed this right now.
“Huh, that bad?” She said.
“Had to talk with my mom after practice today.”
“Oh, how did that go?”
“Awful. She says we have to watch her snake child until she finds a home...where is the little brat anyway?”
“Upstairs in her room.”
“Yep, I decorated the guest room to make her feel more at home. But all she does is sit on the bed all day. Barely even eats anything.”
“She finished her homework?”
“She did her homework, I washed her clothes, and now I’m making dinner.”
I kissed her on the cheek and said: “You are gonna be a great mom, you know that?”
She blushed and suffocated me with a big hug.
“Whoa, now that’s a hug. How much do you weigh again?”
“Chica, you don’t want to know.”
We both just laughed it off, then I went upstairs and put on some clean clothes.
Soon Teresa called out that dinner was ready and I began to head downstairs, but then I stopped and looked at the guest room. What was Cia even doing in there? I tried to open the door, but it was locked. Pfft, funny. She thinks she has privacy. I got my key out and opened the door. First thing I saw was her tail all over the floor, obviously. Then I saw her on the bed listening to her phone with headphones in her ears. I slowly tiptoed through the room and was trying not to step on her tail. It was like a mission impossible movie or something. Once I got to the bed, I picked up her phone to see what she was listening to. “Demon in Disguise” by “The cursed souls”. Jeez, she probably thinks she’s so...badass...Then it kind of hit me. I looked around the room and saw the posters of bands on the wall and stuffed animals on the desk. The whole setup just felt...nostalgic...in a very strange way. I decided to wake her up.
“Wha...what the?! Hey! That’s my music! What the hell?!” She screamed.
“Relax. Relax. I’m just here to check on you. Love what you did to the place.”
“Get out of my room you fucking creep!”
“Wow, you really got a potty mouth for a child.”
“I’m 10! That’s two digits! That makes me a teenager and that means I can kick you out of my room! Now get out!”
“...Dinner is ready.”
“Are you fucking deaf?! And I’m not hungry!”
“Okay, look...as strange as it is to say, I already know what you’re all about. I’m guessing you have a father that didn’t give two shits about you and no matter how much you wanted him to love you, he never even looked at you. So you vowed to be everything he is not just to get under his skin even more and when that started working, you started doing it full time. Creating this character that doesn’t give a shit about anyone and doesn’t need love from nobody...that sound about right?”
“Y-you don’t know me you...you stupid...person!”
“Wow...original...look, you can hit us with any insult at this point. I’m a failed basketball player, Teresa is fat, your tail is freakishly long, we’ve heard it all. But you’re not with him anymore. You’re in a place surrounded by people you actually care about you, okay?”
“You don’t care about me.”
“Ya know, I actually do care. You really remind me so much of me, it’s insane. Like reliving my crazy childhood. And I remember that the only thing that got me through it was Teresa...and I’m going to help you through it too.”
“...Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Because I know what it’s like to feel worthless and unwanted...and I don’t want anyone to feel like that, especially not you...oh that reminds me. You got your passport right?”
“Yea, why? You’re shipping me out like my father?”
“No, we are all going to Paris for one of my preseason games.
“Wait...I get to go to Paris?!”
That was actually the first time I saw her eyes light up with happiness. It felt good making her happy. I was going to talk more about it, but before I could Teresa burst through the door, gasping for breath.
“I...heard on the stairs...are we...going to Paris?!” She said between breaths.
“Yep, looks like it. Family trip time!” I said.
“Oh, I can’t wait to try all the glorious food and pastries and…” then Teresa was interrupted by Cia.
“And candy and sweets and the eiffel tower and…”
“AND, watch the game?!” I Said.
“Oh...well yea, of course baby. We’ll be there.” Said Teresa blushing.
“Oh, I’m flattered, heh. Come on fluffy butt. Let’s go eat dinner.” I Said as I led the way downstairs. I could hear those two planning the trip as they walked behind me. I don’t know what I’m going to do with those two.
