Why we play 5

May 1, 2020: Time running out

“Hello?” I Answered.

“Cloricia.” was my mother...we haven’t talked in a long time. During this whole process, it went from annoying calls to just quick text. Was my mother even really back? It didn’t feel like it. All this time I spent driving her out of my head...and now she’s back in my life in the most disappointing way possible.

“Hi dear. How is she doing?” She asked.

“She’s fine…is that all you need?” I answered.

“No, no there is something else. It’s good news though.”

“...I’m listening.”

“I found a family that will take her.”

“You….you what?”

“Well, I did say that you just needed to watch her until I found another home. And I have...I want to thank you for taking care of her and I know it was a lot, but…”

“Wait Wait’re just gonna let her walk out to another family? Like she’s a fucking piece of furniture or something?”

“Cloricia, What would you have me do? She’s not safe here and we can’t take care of her as long as…”

“As long as your new cheating scumbag of a husband is there? Is that about right?”

“Cloricia, he’s not like that.”

“You know what, what the hell happened to you? You used to be so kind and fun and loving and, you’re just abandoning another child and for what? So you can live the rich bitch life?”

“Cloricia, she tried to kill herself almost every month in this house. She never goes outside, never talks to anyone, she needs a better home and I can’t provide that.”

“You know, during this whole fucking conversation, you never once talked about your new snake of a husband. You ever feel like maybe he’s the problem? Huh?...Fuck, you got me cursing in my car and I just made it home.” I gathered my things and got out of my car. Then I headed inside to the apartment building. “You know what, let me ask this...why did you leave dad for him?”

“...Don’t change the subject, please I found a good family for her. She can be happy there, I promise. Just find a good day you can drop her off.”

I reached our front door and I could hear Cia and Teresa laughing on the other side “No...fuck no. I’m not you...and she already has a good family.”

“Cloricia, are you sure?”

“I want to see you.”

“Enough of this bullshit. I have waited long enough and dealt with so much while you were gone and all I did was secretly wish you would come back...I can get the address from Cia and when these playoffs are over...I’m coming to see finally get some answers.”

“Uh, dear. I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

I hung up. It just felt right. I know it’s my mom, but it just...she didn’t feel like my mother anymore….I don’t know who she was, but I wasn’t going to just let her leave my life again without any with that, I took in a deep breath and opened the door, only to find Teresa and Cia covered in...I guess it’s cake batter.

“Oh, Tex! Heh, I can explain.” Teresa Said with a giggle.

“I’m making a cake! And Teresa is teaching me how!” Cia Yelled.

“Hah, well I can’t wait to try it.”

“You alright dear...Your eyes look red.” Teresa Asked. I rubbed my eyes and gave her a hug.

“Just tired is all. Practicing for the playoffs...and ready to try this awesome cake too!” I Said while hugging Cia.

“Oh, it’s going to be fucking awesome alright!”

“Language!” Teresa Said.

Cia ignored, obviously, and just went back to making her cake.

“Wow babe. I didn’t know you knew how to bake.” I Said.

“Actually, I have no idea what I’m doing…but Cia seems happy so, what the hell.”

“Haha...I love you guys.”
