Vendela Malmqvist was born in Malmö, Sweden. Her father is Swedish and her mother is Danish, so she considers herself “the best of both nations”. Despite being an only child, her lots of cousins were pretty much like siblings to her, often bouncing around both countries trying to keep in touch as much as she can.
Her childhood was pretty much normal and happy and she didn’t have many problems at school except for the usual competitiveness between students. She wasn’t exactly interested in sports until she tried basketball in P.E. class, and her love (as well as a vessel to funnel her inner competitive bunny) began. She joined her school’s team along with some of her friends, who kept on playing until well after graduated from school.
After evaluating her choices and different benefits, Vendela made the, in her family’s eyes, unorthodox decision to cross the Öresund and go to Copenhagen to study business administration in their largest and most prestigious university. It wasn’t easy at first, in between the fees to drive through the bridge connecting both countries and the extra work she took as a barista at a café in the Danish side to help pay her expenses. But in Vendela’s eyes, it was worth it. Malmö was seen as a bed of natural talent for basketball, so programs and caps were always at easy access, while her studies opened doors to the most extensive coaching and facilities of all Denmark; the hare was absorbing so much knowledge about basketball the interest about making this her future career was only eventual. She juggles between college, basketball and work, always finding time to cross back home to Malmö at the end of the day. She loves the organized mess that is her life, but basketball was settled as a passion. She had to find a way to enter the world of sports. And after another season of the FBA wrapped up, after another round of games and camps all over her native country Sweden and her adopted country Denmark, she instinctively tried to figure out the way to get in the FBA. Her life was always defined by crazy hops all around, so the craziest one yet was yet to faze her.
Vendela is very laidback and cheerful. However, she can be a little hotheaded sometimes, and has a self-declared wanderlust. She was notable to never refuse a trip that her basketball playing offered, regardless of it was to Herning or Bucharest. She will say that one of her craziest experiences was the 6 hour drive she took from Malmö to Örebro, to participate in the Guinness World Record attempt by fellow Swedish athlete Sterling Bengtzing, and the 8 hour drive back home (after she agreed to drive new friend Sirbina Thorsson to her home half-way).
