2014 FBA Playoffs

From Furry Basketball Association
Jump to: navigation, search

The 2014 FBA Playoffs was the post-season tournament of the Furry Basketball Association's 2013-14 season. The tournament began on May 30th and finished on July 20th. It was the final playoffs overseen by Commissioner Sterne Davids.

For the first time in his career, superstar point guard Buck Hopper (Rabbit, G) missed the playoffs, having been traded from the defending champion Dakota Bikers to the Texas Lone Stars late in the season, while his former team, the San Jose Thrust, did qualify for the post-season bracket. Both the Tallahassee Typhoons and the Spokane Rapids reached the playoffs for the fifth straight year, while both Montana and Biloxi were notably absent from the bracket.

The first 14 days of the playoffs saw the majority of the top seeds being upset in the first round. For the sixth consecutive year, a #6 seed defeated a #3 seed, as the Baltimore Spirits ousted their divisional rival the Lorain Firestorm in five games. There were also no four-game sweeps, a feat not done since the 2011 FBA Playoffs.

Format

All rounds are best-of-seven series; the team that has four wins advances to the next round. The first three rounds are in a 2H–2L-1H–1L–1H format, where H represents games hosted by the team with the better seed, and L represents games hosted by the team with the worse seed. The FBA Finals follows a 2H-3L-2H format, to balance out the home court advantage better. Home court advantage in the first three rounds belongs to the better-seeded team, even if the worse-seeded team had a better regular season record. Home court advantage in the FBA Finals is determined by regular season record, followed by playoff winning percentage, then head to head record, followed by record vs. opposite conference.

Seeding

Within each conference, the three division winners and the five non-division winners with the most wins qualified for the playoffs. The seedings are based on each team's record; however, a division winner is guaranteed to be ranked at least third, regardless of record. Each conference's bracket is fixed; there is no reseeding.

Tiebreakers

The tiebreakers that determine seedings are:

  1. Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division
  2. Conference record
  3. Division record (for the tied teams that are in the same division)
  4. Home game record
  5. Head-to-head record

If there were more than two teams tied, the team that wins the tiebreaker gets the best seed, while the other teams were "re-broken" from the first step until all ties were resolved. Since the three division winners were guaranteed a spot in the top three, ties to determine the division winners had to be broken before any other ties.

Spokane wins series 4-3

With the season series favoring the top-seeded Voyageurs, it was expected to be a short series between the two clubs. Things looked dire for the Rapids when former MVP Xavier Knutten (Squirrel, G/F) suffered deep bruising in his tail during Game 2 up in Winnipeg that sidelined the rodent for a week.

San Jose wins series 4-1

Even with Alaska winning their first divisional title in nearly a decade, injuries at the end of the regular season saw the Arctics limping into the post-season down two key players in their back court. Meanwhile, the struggling Thrust showed sparks of new life after long-time veteran Shane Rufus (Red Wolf, G) formally announced his retirement at the end of this season, and it showed as the club rallied around the lupine in this series.

Regular season series

This was the second meeting in the last six playoffs between the Arctics and the Thrust.

Edmonton wins series 4-3

Two years in existence, and in both years the Totems made it to the third round of the playoffs, this year with much more legitimacy as the winners of their division. Despite having the same regular season record as Edmonton, the Spectrums do not have home court advantage in this matchup even though they swept all four meetings during the course of the regular season.

Plymouth wins series 4-2

Despite bankrolling a big-name lineup, the Tides were lucky to even squeeze into the playoffs thanks to both Albany and Pittsburgh falling out of contention in the last month of the regular season. Meanwhile the Taproots found their groove after struggling in the past few years, sparked by Splash Sisters Kasa Yalenchka (Snow Leopard, G) and Nina Lime (Wolf, G/F) as well as Rookie of the Year candidate Raoul Kidane (Ethiopian Wolf, C).

Regular season series

This was the first meeting in the playoffs between the Taproots and the Tides.

Excluding the couple of changes to the starting lines of these two teams, the matchup would have been a perfect clone of their previous post-season meeting. The Moonshiners were definitely looking to avenge themselves, while the Pride had a tradition to uphold.

This was the second meeting in the last six playoffs between the Moonshiners and the Pride.

Despite back-to-back divisional championships for Lorain, the Firestorm only managed a .500 record against playoff-bound teams in the last month of the regular season. Meanwhile Baltimore rallied in the final 10 games of the regular season, going 7-3 and pulling even with the Minutemen as the Spirits entered the playoffs.

Williamsburg wins series 4-1

The budding rivalry between these two teams simmered after the Minutemen won the title and immediately sent Lenny Hicks (Coydog, F) to Edmonton, leaving the aging Charles Yotechuk (Coyote, F) on the Typhoons to re-assert his dominance in the Eastern Conference at the power forward position. While Tallahassee had swept the regular season matchups against Williamsburg, they entered the playoffs once more without franchise mustelid Adrian McCormick (Badger, F) which proved to be a key factor in this series.

Plymouth wins series 4-1

After being mercilessly blown out in the last game of her previous Conference Semifinal appearance, Nina Lime (Wolf, G/F) faced off against the same team that practically steamrolled their way to the championship for potential vengeance. However, Williamsburg had their own version of Plymouth's Splash Sisters with both Vera La Tiérra (Red Vixen, G) and Crystal Davis (Cheetah, G) delivering consistent offense and defense for the Virginia franchise.

Tennessee wins series 4-2

Both of these teams entered the second round of the playoffs down a player who was expected to return later in the series. With Baltimore having won the regular-season series against Tennessee and the Moonshiners sporting the same type of lineup that the Firestorm employed, it was almost expected that the Spirits would emerge victorious and move on to the Conference Finals.

Tennessee wins series 4-2

Last time the Taproots made it to the third round of the playoffs, they used a smart balance of aggressive play and team-oriented offense with their home court advantage to keep the Pride from going any further. Whereas the Moonshiners haven't been this deep into the playoffs since joining the league, and hope to continue their dominating run towards the FBA Finals.

Tennessee wins series 4-1

While it was the first ever Finals appearance for both of these teams, there were players on both sides that had experienced the pressure and the spectacle that was the FBA Championship Series. The spotlight was heavily centered on the 2014 MVP Rocky Caracal (Lynx, G) matching up against the 2012 MIP Jamie Velasquez (Seagull, G/F), but it was Aragon Fisher (Otter, G) that would be the solid performer throughout the series as the mustelid earned the 2014 Finals MVP in the 5-game series.

Regular season series

This was the first meeting in the playoffs between the Moonshiners and the Totems.
